CESAM – the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, a Research Unit of the University of Aveiro with Associate Laboratory status, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026, marking a trajectory defined by excellence in research on the environment, marine ecosystems and sustainability. Over the past two and a half decades, CESAM has established itself as a national and international reference, developing fundamental and applied science that supports environmental management and informed decision-making.
To mark the beginning of this anniversary year, CESAM presents the official 25th-anniversary logo, whose visual identity incorporates elements associated with the centre’s main thematic lines. In line with the CESAM Identity Manual, the polychromatic representation integrates four colours symbolising natural domains—land, air, and water—reflecting the diversity of the systems studied and the multidisciplinary approach that characterises CESAM’s work. These colours evoke core research themes, including biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems, marine and coastal ecosystems, atmosphere and environmental quality, as well as the interactions between environment and society.
The 25th-anniversary celebrations take place within the framework of the CESAM Strategic Plan 2024–2033, which structures its transdisciplinary and transformative research into three Transversal Thematic Lines and six Research Clusters, dedicated to advancing solutions for climate change, pollution, and socio-ecological systems. Within this context, CESAM reinforces its ambition to promote fundamental science and knowledge that supports evidence-based policies and sustainable practices, in close collaboration with national and international partners.
Guided by a One Health approach, CESAM conducts research that integrates environment, human health, animal health and community well-being, seeking innovative responses to complex challenges in a context of global change. This integrated perspective strengthens the centre’s contribution to sustainable development and to the formulation of more effective public policies.
Throughout 2026, CESAM will promote a set of initiatives aimed at celebrating its history, consolidating its present and envisioning its future, highlighting key scientific achievements and reinforcing engagement with scientific and institutional partners, as well as with society. This commemorative year will also provide an opportunity to consolidate CESAM’s positioning as a national and international centre of excellence in environmental and marine sciences, aligned with the 2024–2033 vision and reaffirming its role in addressing major environmental and marine challenges and societal needs—always committed to Caring for the Future.
