Ângela Almeida, CESAM/DQ researcher, participated in the program “Scientist Returns to School” in Águeda

Ângela Almeida, a CESAM/DQ researcher, took part in the “Scientist Returns to School” program, promoted by Native Scientists, on February 11, 2026, visiting EB1 Valongo do Vouga and EB1 de Macinhata do Vouga in Águeda, accompanied by a colleague from her research group and two colleagues from Native Scientists.

During the activity with 4th-grade students, Ângela Almeida explained what it means to be a scientist and how science can help solve everyday problems. The main topic was wastewater treatment and the role of materials such as activated carbon in removing contaminants from water.

The children took part in a hands-on experiment, testing the effectiveness of activated carbon, and showed great enthusiasm and curiosity, asking many questions and sharing creative ideas. At the end, they reflected on how they can contribute to water protection, suggesting actions such as strengthening recycling efforts or returning unused medicines to pharmacies.

The researcher highlighted that it was “moving to see the children’s engagement and to realize how science can inspire responsible behaviors and contribute to a more sustainable future,” adding that practical activities like this can spark scientific vocations and encourage students to think about innovative solutions to environmental problems.
