The 1st National Conference on Environmental Justice will take place on 19 and 20 February 2026, at the Department of Environment and Planning (DAO), University of Aveiro.
This will be a first-of-its-kind event in Portugal, aimed at promoting debate and critical reflection on the challenges and opportunities related to environmental justice. The conference will bring together a broad range of experts, including researchers, public managers, policymakers, and representatives of civil society organisations working in areas such as the environment, health, and law.
At a time when environmental issues are becoming increasingly relevant in social and political arenas, this initiative aims to explore the multiple dimensions of environmental justice in the national context. Topics will include its social and economic implications, its links to human rights, planning and governance dynamics, as well as legal frameworks and public policies with an impact on social and environmental justice.
This conference represents an important step towards building a national agenda in this field, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue, cross-sector engagement, and the search for integrated solutions to support fairer and more sustainable development.
CESAM is part of both the organising and scientific committees, with several researchers from the centre involved, including in the coordination of the event. This contribution reflects CESAM’s commitment to scientific and interdisciplinary approaches addressing the environmental, social, and territorial dimensions of environmental justice.
