
On 4–6 November 2026, the 19th Congress of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS 2026) will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, bringing together researchers from around the world in the fields of bacteriology, virology, and mycology.
The congress will promote discussion of the latest advances in microbiology through a scientific programme that includes plenary sessions, oral communications, poster presentations, and workshops. Topics will include microbial genetics, molecular and synthetic biology, gene regulation, proteomics, and applied microbiology in areas such as biotechnology, health, industry, and environmental sustainability.
Special attention will be given to the role of microorganisms in the sustainability of ecosystems and oceans, as well as to the impact of artificial intelligence on microbiology research and applications. The central theme of the congress will be “Beyond the Microscope: AI & Innovation in Microbiology.”
