Ocean Break Seminar – Exploring marine ecosystem responses to stress using trait-based approaches in the Azores Marine Park

24/10/2025
13:00 - 14:00

On October 24, between 13:00 and 14:00, in Room 9.1.1 at DEMaC, Neus Campanià-Llovet, researcher at CESAM/DBio, will present a talk entitled “Exploring marine ecosystem responses to stress using trait-based approaches in the Azores Marine Park.”

Trait-based approaches are increasingly applied alongside taxonomy to enhance the understanding of marine ecosystem resilience and their responses to environmental and anthropogenic pressures. This seminar will present recent research conducted in the Azores Marine Park, employing two distinct methodologies.

The first involves a vulnerability assessment to temperature variation, which integrates species traits with spatial distribution and environmental conditions to identify areas of high vulnerability. The second focuses on community-level simulations of deep-sea mining impacts, comparing multiple disturbance scenarios against a null model to examine how species loss and subsequent recolonisation affect functional diversity.

These analyses highlight ecologically vulnerable regions and quantify the functional consequences of species loss, providing valuable insights that can inform conservation and management strategies under multiple environmental stressors.
