The Department of Biology, curated by Aldiro Pereira, will present the photography exhibition “Conservation of Marine Ecosystems in Santo Antão, Cape Verde” at the DBio Exhibition Niche, from 25 May to 4 September 2026. Authored by CESAM/DBio researcher Teresa Amaro and Tristan Ornelas, the exhibition offers a visual insight into part of the work they carried out on this island.

The Department of Biology has long demonstrated a continuous and consistent interest in promoting and organising photography exhibitions dedicated to a wide range of themes, whenever biodiversity, environmental sustainability and ecosystem conservation are at the centre of reflection. In this context, DBio particularly values proposals that, in addition to technical quality, reveal a strong visual and communicational impact, recognising photography as a privileged tool for raising awareness and promoting scientific outreach among broad audiences. Therefore, all proposals that align with these principles and demonstrate rigour, thematic depth and conceptual coherence are naturally welcomed.

This exhibition is a clear and representative example of what DBio stands for and seeks to encourage. It consists of a set of images based on a particularly demanding body of work, developed through a complex and highly specialised process, reflecting deep knowledge of the photographed subject and of the context in which it is found. The specificity of the theme, combined with a careful and methodologically structured approach, results in a cohesive and well-informed visual narrative.

The Republic of Cape Verde is an archipelago whose identity, culture and economy are deeply dependent on the sea. In Santo Antão, an island marked by significant social and environmental vulnerability, marine ecosystems play an essential role in food security, employment and the well-being of coastal communities. However, they face increasing pressures arising from environmental changes and human activities, making it urgent to strengthen scientific knowledge and conservation efforts.

COAST is a scientific project dedicated to the study and valorisation of the marine ecosystems of Santo Antão. Through advanced technology and an integrated approach, the project characterises habitats, assesses biodiversity, identifies vulnerabilities and supports the definition of sustainable management and marine conservation strategies.

The exhibition can be visited during DBio’s regular opening hours: Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
