Seagrass meadows provide important ecosystem services to benefit biodiversity, human health and climate, including increased diversity of flora and fauna, flood regulation, sediment stabilization and carbon sequestration. Therefore, seagrass conservation and restoration efforts are taking center stage, reversing the global decline of these ecosystems.

However, the potential use of seagrass recolonization for the rehabilitation of degraded areas, namely for phytoremediation and/or phytostabilization of contaminated sites, has not yet been explored. In a global view of the results obtained in the RemediGrass and ReMoliço projects, researcher João Pedro Coelho (CESAM – Center for Environmental and Marine Studies and University of Aveiro) will talk about the benefits and challenges of this innovative Nature-based Solution for the restoration of ecosystems .
