“Whaling in the Atlantic” Scientific Meeting

22/07/2026

The Sesimbra Maritime Museum is hosting the “Whaling in the Atlantic” Scientific Meeting on July 22, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM, at the Coastal Cultural Center in Sesimbra.

This initiative brings together researchers and specialists from national and international institutions—hailing from mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Brazil, Cape Verde, and Norway—to discuss one of the most significant economic and maritime activities in Atlantic history. The program is structured around four thematic panels covering the long historical span of whaling—from its medieval and modern antecedents to 20th-century industrialization—as well as its technical and corporate organization, its territories throughout the Lusophone Atlantic, and contemporary challenges regarding its conservation and memory. The meeting will conclude with a round-table discussion on “Memory and Heritage.”

Free admission.

Registration is mandatory at: https://forms.gle/H3MFDHpPYG7kAbfx8 (or via email to iolanda.avila@cm-sesimbra.pt).

CESAM will be represented at this event by Clarisse Ferreira, a PhD student, who will participate in Panel IV with a presentation on the challenges of environmental education in defending the biodiversity of the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park.
