Award in the field of biodiversity informatics

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), an international infrastructure of which Portugal is a member, has launched the 2026 edition of the Graduate Researchers Award, aimed at Master’s and PhD students. The award fosters research and innovation in the field of biodiversity informatics, with awards based on criteria of originality and innovation, the use and analysis of data published by GBIF, and also the effectiveness and impact on biodiversity and its conservation. The 2026 programme will provide €5,000 prizes recognizing the work of two graduate students.

Eligibility

Candidates from each country are nominated by their respective national nodes. In the case of Portugal, master’s and doctoral students are eligible for nomination, provided they are Portuguese nationals or students of another nationality enrolled at a Portuguese institution.

Award

The 2026 programme will provide €5,000 prizes recognizing the work of two graduate students (preferably, one Master’s and one PhD candidate). Portugal, will nominate two candidates selected among national applications submitted to the GBIF Portuguese Node.

How to apply

Candidates from each country are nominated by their respective national nodes. This way, candidates should first submit their application, by email, to the Portuguese node: node@gbif.pt. The direct submission of applications to the GBIF International Secretariat is not possible. Submissions of incomplete proposals will not be considered.
