Mário Ruivo Award challenges young people to explore maritime professions through film

The Mário RuivoAward annually awards short films (up to 7 minutes) in Portuguese or subtitled in Portuguese that highlight the importance of the ocean. This initiative aims to convey the ocean’s role as a life support system on Earth, regulating climate, providing food, transportation, leisure, and other economic, social, environmental, cultural, and emotional benefits. Applicants must be aged between 14 and 21 years old.

Categories

  • Mensagem (Message): Best transmission of the ocean’s role for humanity and global equilibrium;
  • Criatividade (Creativity): Outstanding creative concept and production techniques;
  • Cultura Científica (Scientific Culture): Best communication of the importance of ocean science for society and the environment;
  • Futuro (Future): Best film by applicants aged 14–17, combining message and creativity.

Eligibility

  • Open to individuals or teams of up to five members;
  • Applicants must be aged between 14 and 21 years old and must reside or study in Portugal or legally authorized to stay in the country, or reside abroad with Portuguese nationality;
  • Films must be in Portuguese or subtitled in Portuguese;
  • Candidates may use up to one minute of footage from films available on the Cinemateca Digital platform (www.cinemateca.pt), with prior authorization from the rights holders (contact: acesso@cinemateca.pt).

Funding

A prize of 2,000 euros will be awarded in each category.
