The National Geographic Society invites applications for projects that promote ocean literacy by fostering strong emotional connections to the ocean and developing a sense of ocean identity through immersive learning experiences. This call supports community-based initiatives that address socioeconomic, psychological, cultural, and physical barriers to ocean connection, with a focus on inclusive, transdisciplinary approaches. Projects should be designed with and for the communities they serve, emphasizing a “one water system” perspective. Funding is available for both pilot and scaling projects, as well as research measuring the effectiveness of educational innovations. Open to applicants over the age of 18.

Types of projects

• Community-based projects that help people form emotional bonds with the ocean and develop ocean identity;
• Projects that address barriers to ocean connection (e.g., socioeconomic, psychological, cultural, physical);
• Transdisciplinary projects combining natural and social sciences, storytelling, local knowledge, and ocean-focused design;
• Projects must pilot, scale, or measure the effectiveness of educational innovations that develop learners of all ages’ skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to foster ocean stewardship.

Eligibility

• Open to applicants over the age of 18;
• Applicant must demonstrate relevant education experience;
• Project must align with the Education primary focus and Ocean focus area;
• Applicant must not be a current National Geographic staff member;
• Project should not start before January 2027;
• Applicant must demonstrate a strong connection to and/or track record in the community(ies) where the project will take place;
• Project must be designed with the community and reflective of its needs.

Funding & Duration

• Level I grants: Up to USD 20,000 for projects completed within one year;
• Level II grants: Up to USD 100,000 (average USD 50,000–65,000) for projects completed within two years.
