Fullbright and FCT are funding PhD students that want to do research in the United States, through two different schemes: (1) Studentship Fulbright Doctoral Scholarship for PhD students admitted in PhD programs at the US; (2) Studentship Fulbright for Research for PhD fellows funded by FCT that need to carry out a period of research at a US university.
A Studentship Fulbright Doctoral Scholarship is supported by FCT and is aimed at national students admitted to PhD programs at United States universities in the academic year 2025/2026, and is funded up to a maximum of $36,000 for the first year of studies. Candidates must have not resided in the USA for a period of 5 years or more in the 6 years prior to the date of the call. Preference will be given to students whose academic career has been developed in a Portuguese higher education institution. The Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education will also accompany the scholarship holder during their stay in the USA. Additional details can be found here.
As for Studentship Fulbright for Research with the support of FCT is available to support research projects at universities or research centers in the United States of America for the academic year 2025/2026. This Studentship is aimed at doctoral scholarship holders directly funded by the FCT who have planned or will plan, within the scope of their training plan, to carry out a period of research at a US university or research center. Both the host institution and your Portuguese supervisor need to agree with this mobility. Candidates must have not resided in the USA for a period of 5 years or more in the 6 years prior to the date of the call. The project must last 4 to 9 consecutive months. The students who are selected for these Studentships will enjoy, among other benefits, the opportunity to participate in seminars and other cultural and scientific activities organized by the Fulbright Program during their stay in the USA and integration into the worldwide network of Fulbright grantees.
