Urban Studies Foundation Launches New Urban Urgencies Programme

23/03/2026

Deadline: 23 March 2026

The Scottish charitable organisation Urban Studies Foundation (USF) has announced a new funding initiative aimed at tackling the most pressing challenges facing cities today. Topics of interest include the climate emergency, housing and food insecurity, pandemics and public health, threats to democracy, conflict or urbicide, artificial intelligence and technology, dispossession and inequality, and other existential uncertainties. PhD candidates may participate with supervisor support. Grants of up to £35,000 are available for projects lasting up to 18 months.

The scheme is designed to support innovative, rapid-response research addressing emergent urban issues while contributing to inclusive, equitable and sustainable urban futures. Proposals should be firmly situated within the academic field of urban studies and link evidence to theory and practice.

Consortium

Projects must involve a meaningful partnership between at least two organisations, including at least one academic and one non-academic partner (NGO, charity, think tank, community group or business). Collaborations should advance knowledge production, mobilisation and capacity building, and demonstrate relevance to policy or practice.

Applications from researchers worldwide are welcome, with teams comprising two to three co-applicants. PhD candidates may participate with supervisor support.

Funding and Duration

Grants of up to £35,000 are available for projects lasting up to 18 months. Overheads are not eligible. Funding can cover costs such as equipment, training, research assistance, travel, fieldwork and translation.
