CESAM partners in the seminar “Biomethane on the Move” held at the University of Aveiro.

CESAM supported the seminar “Biomethane in Motion – Sustainable Solutions from Organic Waste”, held on October 29 at the University of Aveiro, which focused on exploring pathways for the valorization of biowaste with environmental and social benefits.

Organized as an activity of the METO Project, winner of the EDP University Energy School 2025 competition, the seminar brought together experts, public and private entities, and other stakeholders, as well as researchers and students, to reflect on the present and future of biomethane in Portugal.

The opening session featured Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Rector of the University of Aveiro, Amadeu Soares, Director of CESAM, Fátima Lopes Alves, Director of DAO and Deputy Director of CESAM, Vera Pinto Pereira, President of the EDP Foundation, and João Santos, student coordinator of the METO project team. The opening was followed by presentations from Francisco Gírio, Head of the Bioenergy and Biorefineries R&D Unit at LNEG, Cláudio de Jesus, Senior Advisor to the Board of Directors at Águas de Portugal Group, and Flávio Silva, CESAM researcher and professor at the Department of Environment and Planning. The programme concluded with a round table dedicated to the future of bioenergy.

According to Amadeu Soares, “When we bring together universities, companies and public institutions, we can turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity for the region and for the country. CESAM will continue to connect knowledge with solutions that matter to people.”

This activity was carried out within the framework of Research Cluster 6 (Circular Economy, Resource Optimization and Energy) of CESAM, strengthening collaboration with institutional and business partners to promote the sustainable valorization of biowaste and the energy transition.
