CESAM researchers study the social and economic impact of insect-based products.

Researchers from CESAM/DAO are developing a study aimed at analyzing the social and economic impacts associated with the value chains of new bioindustrial products derived from insects, within the “One Health” Work Package of the InsectERA Mobilizing Agenda.

The Work Package, led by Paula Quinteiro, with the collaboration of researchers Marta Ferreira Dias, Ana Cláudia Dias, Ana Fonseca, and Sara Silva, seeks to identify relevant social and economic indicators for consumers, local communities, and other stakeholders.

To collect this information, the team invites consumers and local communities to complete an online questionnaire, designed according to UNEP/SETAC (2020) international guidelines and adapted to the Portuguese reality of insect production. The surveys address topics such as employment, regional development, economic benefits, consumer perceptions, and strategies to mitigate impacts, ensuring that the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector are properly assessed.

All interested parties are invited to participate through the following links:

These data will be integrated into a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), allowing for a comprehensive analysis of this emerging sector’s contribution to the circular economy and the green transition.

The InsectERA Agenda aims to promote the circular economy and drive the development of new products, processes, and services based on R&D and innovation, with high added value and the incorporation of knowledge and technology, enabling the transition towards environmental sustainability. The Agenda is one of the 21 Mobilizing/Green Agendas for Business Innovation under Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) in which the University of Aveiro participates.
