The Online Knowledge Library (b-on) published its Statistical Report relative to the year of 2025, which maps the utilization of scientific resources by higher education, research, and health institutions in Portugal. This document underlines the fundamental role of these tools in the access to scientific literature that sustains the progress of knowledge at a national level.
The scientific production of the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) stands out as one of the main motors of the use of these resources. As a research unit of excellence of the University of Aveiro (UA), CESAM uses b-on to sustain its multidisciplinary research, which covers critical areas such as biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
The integration of scientific publications and the work developed by the researchers of the center demonstrate the dependence and the invaluable value of these digital tools for the quality of scientific work. The relevance of this interaction is reflected in the need to ensure that the access to knowledge be continuous and effective for the technological and scientific development of the unit.
The University of Aveiro consolidated itself as the third institution with the largest volume of downloads in university education in 2025, totaling 2,315,378 downloads. This expressive volume reflects the intense research activity of the UA, in which CESAM, as an Associated Laboratory, assumes a strategic role and of high impact in the production of scientific knowledge of international reference.
The report highlights still the dimension of the b-on network, which, in 2025, served 67 institutions and registered more than 127 million searches in its specialized service. The total of downloads of articles reached the mark of 22,289,474 and there was verified a growth of 15% in the contents in Open Access (Gold Open Access) against 2024, consolidating a growing trend of opening of science.
