João Dias on Science Cast: Between Floods and Climate Change

João Dias, CESAM researcher and Director of the Department of Physics at the University of Aveiro, was a guest on the podcast Science Cast, where he discussed some of the most pressing scientific and environmental issues of today. Among the topics addressed were climate change, the increase in extreme weather events, and the energy challenges shaping contemporary society.

During the conversation, the specialist explained his research work in the field of physics applied to the environment and climate, highlighting the importance of monitoring and modeling natural systems to better understand the evolution of extreme events. Among the examples discussed were the recent floods that affected several regions of Portugal—phenomena that, according to the researcher, may become more frequent and intense in the context of global warming.

Another central point of the interview was energy consumption and the current development model. The researcher warned of the need to accelerate the energy transition but emphasized that technological innovation alone will not be sufficient. According to him, it is equally essential to promote behavioral changes, greater efficiency in resource use, and collective reflection on consumption patterns.

His participation in the podcast also aimed to bring science closer to the public by promoting accessible communication on complex topics and reinforcing the contribution of scientific research to political and social decision-making in the face of the climate crisis.
