Paulo Baganha, CESAM/DGEO researcher, comments on SIC about the sand replenishment interventions along the coast.

The CESAM continuously monitors sand replenishment interventions along the Portuguese coast, assessing the effectiveness of these measures and their impact on coastal protection. Paulo Baganha, CESAM/DGEO researcher, highlighted on SIC the role of science in this process, emphasizing the importance of monitoring these coastal defense actions in the face of erosion and climate change.

This operation will allow the beach to become wider and will also help protect the coastal strip of the Aveiro region. The ongoing sand replenishment actions are part of a national coastal protection strategy, with works taking place simultaneously from Moledo, in the north, to Vila Real de Santo António, in the Algarve, passing through critical areas such as Figueira da Foz and Costa de Caparica.

In the Aveiro region, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) has launched large-scale interventions in Costa Nova and Barra, depositing around 140,000 cubic meters of sand from the navigation channel of the Port of Aveiro. This project, which will last for three weeks, also includes maintenance work on groynes, dunes, and walkways.

Despite the significant reinforcement of these efforts, the effectiveness of the measures will always depend on the natural evolution of the coastline. Therefore, the scientific monitoring carried out by CESAM is essential to assess the impacts and ensure the sustainable protection of the Portuguese coast.
