PLASTICBUG aims to understand microplastics (MPs)’ role as carriers of pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in freshwater and food chain. Combining fieldwork and lab assays, it studies factors driving MPs-ARB association, impact on ARB survival and uptake by organisms, cumulative adverse effects and trophic transfer. Results will inform plans and regulations. Stakeholder engagement, educational resources and events are planned.
