Researchers from CESAM at the 13th OHM-Estarreja Colloquium

The 13th OHM-Estarreja Colloquium takes place on 13 and 14 November 2025, under the theme “Rethinking OHM-Estarreja for the Future”. CESAM researchers Célia Alves, Catarina Venâncio, Patrícia Veríssimo Silva and Ana Rita Silva are participating in the event to discuss the environmental and social challenges of the region, presenting research results developed within the framework of the observatory.

The meeting brings together specialists from various fields to debate strategies for sustainability, land management, and mitigation of environmental impacts in the municipality of Estarreja. Established to study the multiple effects of industrial activity in the area, the OHMI Estarreja aims to deepen knowledge about these impacts and monitor the progress of mitigation measures already in place. The municipality, which comprises five parishes and covers 108.16 km², is located next to the Ria de Aveiro — Portugal’s largest brackish lagoon and a Special Protection Area (SPA) of high ecological value.

The proximity to the Estarreja Chemical Complex and the Ria de Aveiro, a sensitive ecosystem and habitat for numerous species of aquatic and terrestrial birds, makes this region a priority area for monitoring and research.

Over the two days, discussions will focus on approaches to land use, soil management, and sustainability policies as some of the main outcomes expected from the event.
