In the opening episode of the 4th season of Science Cast, researcher Roberto Martins (CESAM/DBIO) shared his scientific journey and the work he carries out in the field of marine ecotoxicology, focusing on the effects of contaminants, biocides and nanomaterials on marine ecosystems. Throughout the conversation, he explained how his research contributes to environmental risk assessment and to the development of more sustainable solutions, such as technologies and coatings designed according to safe-by-design principles, aiming for a lower impact on the marine environment.
Beyond research, Roberto Martins also highlighted the importance of promoting scientific literacy and engaging directly with the community, particularly younger audiences. In the podcast, he emphasized his commitment to raising awareness among children and young people about environmental challenges, arguing that behavioural change begins with knowledge and an understanding of science. In this context, he shared his experience in science outreach activities in schools, which he carries out whenever possible, bringing research closer to students’ everyday lives and encouraging greater environmental awareness from an early age.
The conversation reinforced the idea that science goes beyond the laboratory, playing a crucial role in society—not only in generating knowledge, but also in shaping more informed, critical and environmentally conscious citizens, aware of the need to protect the environment and the oceans.
