Rosário Domingues from CESAM/DQ on “90 Seconds of Science”: How to Transform Fish By-products into New Value-Added Products

The “90 Seconds of Science” programme featured the work of Rosário Domingues, a researcher at CESAM/DQ, whose research focuses on adding value to fish industry by-products through the development of high-value products.

In the episode, the researcher explains how by-products generated during fish processing, often regarded as waste, can be used as raw materials to produce ingredients for food applications and other uses. This approach is rooted in the principles of the circular economy, promoting a more efficient use of marine resources while helping to reduce waste.

Research carried out at the University of Aveiro aims to transform these materials into compounds with potential applications across different sectors, creating value from resources that would otherwise be discarded. According to Rosário Domingues, the valorisation of fish by-products represents an opportunity to develop more sustainable and innovative solutions, combining scientific progress with environmental and economic benefits.

The episode highlights the role of research in advancing the blue bioeconomy and sustainability, demonstrating how science can contribute to the full utilisation of marine resources and the development of new value-added products. “90 Seconds of Science” is a joint initiative of Antena 1 and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), with the support of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
