Rita Silva and Diana Campos, researchers at CESAM/DBIO, led a science outreach session for students from Escola Básica de Pardilhó as part of the European Week of Biodiversity and the Environment (SEEB 2026), promoted by CNRS and the OHMI Estarreja – Human-Environment International Observatory.
Organised by the researchers from the University of Aveiro, with the collaboration of PhD students José Pinto and Fábio Chen, the initiative aimed to bring younger audiences closer to environmental science through practical and interactive activities. During the session, participants had the opportunity to observe and interact with several bioindicators and organisms commonly used in scientific research, including terrestrial and aquatic organisms.
The activity introduced students to research in ecotoxicology and environmental health, contributing to the promotion of scientific literacy and environmental awareness among younger generations. Direct observation of these organisms proved to be an effective tool for making complex scientific concepts more accessible and connecting them with the biodiversity present in everyday life.
The session was carried out within the scope of the TERRA Project, integrated in OHMI Estarreja – Human-Environment International Observatory.
