Sílvia Coelho, a researcher at CESAM/DAO, took part in the “Scientist Returns to School” programme

Sílvia Coelho, a researcher at CESAM/DAO, took part on 19 January 2026 in the 2025/2026 edition of the programme Scientist Returns to School, promoted by Native Scientists. As part of the initiative, she visited Outeiro Primary School, in Rande, and Boavista Primary School, in Sernande, in the municipality of Felgueiras, accompanied by a member of the Native Scientists team. The initiative involved around 20 pupils at each school, from the 1st to the 4th grade, and aimed to bring science closer to children through a workshop dedicated to the theme “The Air We Breathe”.

The researcher led one workshop in each school, during which the children had the opportunity to explore the concept of air, understand that although invisible it is always present, and reflect on how different human activities can influence its quality. Through simple demonstrations and a hands-on group activity, the pupils identified sources of air pollution and discussed everyday behaviours that contribute to cleaner air, helping to protect both the environment and human health.

Sílvia Coelho highlights that “it was very rewarding to observe the children’s engagement throughout the workshop, even when addressing more abstract concepts, such as the existence of pollutants that we cannot see. The curiosity they showed, the questions they asked, and their enthusiasm during the group activities revealed a strong capacity to reflect on what affects the air we breathe and on the role each person can play in protecting it. It was particularly interesting to see how they were able to translate these ideas into concrete actions, demonstrating a very positive environmental awareness from an early age.”

Participation in this edition of the Scientist Returns to School programme reinforces the importance of the connection between the scientific research carried out at CESAM/DAO and the community, contributing to the promotion of scientific literacy and to raising awareness among younger generations about the importance of air quality and the adoption of more sustainable behaviours.
