This project aims at developing nanoparticles (NPs) integrating heaters and thermometers. Heating is elicited by light or magnetism, the temperature readout is optical, and the ratiometric thermometric probes are lanthanide ions (Ln3+). These are innovative systems with a considerable potential to unveil heat transfer and diffusion processes at the nanoscale. As case studies, we will (i) map in vitro and in vivo the local intracellular temperature, a crucial parameter for improving hyperthermia efficacy, and (ii) measure the instantaneous Brownian velocity of NPs dispersed in a liquid.
