The Integrated Programme SmartBioR is composed by a single research line entitled Smart Valorization of Endogenous Marine Biological Resources Under a Changing Climate. It addresses The Valorization and Efficient Use of Endogenous Natural Resources, a priority for Portugal Centro-Region. It aims to strengthen regional scientific research, technological development and innovation through the recruitment of highly qualified human resources complementing consolidated skills at the beneficiaries.
RIS3 Prioritary Domains:
Innovation Platform of RIS3 of Portugal Centro-Region
The Valorization and Efficient Use of Endogenous Natural Resources.
Lines of Action within the Innovation Platform:
1) Preservation and Sustainability of Endogenous Natural Resources
2) Monitoring and Integrated Management of Endogenous Natural Resources
3) Development of products, processes and Services targeting the Promotion of Value Chains Associated with Endogenous Natural Resources
Societal Challenges to which the Integrated Programme Responds
Societal Challenge 2: Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy (General Lines 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5)
Societal Challenge 5: Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials (General Lines 5.1, 5.2, 5.4 and 5.5)
At Ria de Aveiro
1) Preservation and Sustainability of Endogenous Natural Resources, namely the sustainable use of Endogenous Marine Biological Resources (EMBR) (e.g. macrophytes and bivalves); 2) Monitoring and Integrated Management of Endogenous Natural Resources, namely real time monitoring of production areas through Technology, Information, Communications, and Electronic (TICE) and the fostering of more sustainable production practices in line with the principles of circular economy, such as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA); and 3) Development of Products, Processes and Services Targeting the Promotion of Value Chains Associated with Endogenous Natural Resources, namely by screening EMBR for value-added biomolecules, using them for biodiesel production and add value to these resources through their traceability and certification of origin and/or production.
