Ocean Break Seminar Series – Coastal Pollution

31/01/2024
14:00 - 15:00

On the next day, January 31st, at 14:00, another remote edition of the “Ocean Break” seminar series related to marine research conducted at CESAM will take place.

This time, researcher Umberto Andriolo from the Institute of Systems and Computers Engineering of Coimbra (INESC Coimbra) will give a presentation titled “On the use of drones for an integrated study of coastal changes and marine litter pollution on coasts.”

The lecture will address the global issue of excessive marine waste. According to the researcher, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to learn more about coastal pollution, implement mitigation measures, and promote cleaning activities. The presentation will showcase the framework developed within the UAS4Litter project to survey waste using drones on beaches and dunes. The assessments allowed describing and understanding the interaction between marine waste items, beach morphodynamics, and dune vegetation. The results of UAS4Litter have sparked great interest in the scientific community and created synergies with institutions in various European countries, Brazil, and Japan.

The lecture will be presented through the ZOOM link: https://videoconf-colibri.zoom.us/j/96875050438

Biographical Note: Umberto Andriolo is a postdoctoral researcher at INESC Coimbra who has studied the Portuguese coastal environment for the past ten years. With Professor Gil Gonçalves, he developed the UAS4Litter project, which used drones to quantify and analyze the level of pollution from marine waste on the coast.
