Early Career Researchers in marine sciences are called to be part of the OYSTER group in 2025

16/12/2024

Deadline: 16 December 2024

The EuroMarine Network, of which CESAM is a member, is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative Early Career Researchers (ECRs) who are willing to play an important role supporting young scientists in EuroMarine, as well as advocating for marine science and healthy oceans in general. Candidates are expected to engage in the different activities carried out by OYSTER group throughout the year and to be proactive in developing new activities within the group.

Background

OYSTER (Orienting Young ScienTists of EuroMarine) is EuroMarine’s permanent working group to support young marine researchers, aiming to improve their representation and to create opportunities for their professional development. Keeping a participatory and bottom-up approach, OYSTER is led by a committed group of around 20 ECRs across EuroMarine Member Institutions. New group members are recruited every year.

The CESAM PhD student Joana Fernandes and the Assistant Researcher Diana Madeira are members of this group.

More information about OYSTER group can be found here.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates must be PhD students or post-doctoral researchers (within 5 years after the completion of their PhD) or technicians/research assistants (within 7 years after the completion of their MSc degree), and who are based at EuroMarine Member Organisations (CESAM is a member).

Candidates should have experience in marine research and be willing to use their creativity, communication and interpersonal skills to help promote marine sciences and EuroMarine activities.

Previous experience in other collaborative networks would be advantageous, although not mandatory.  Seeking balance and better connections, individuals with a background in social sciences or in the science-policy interface are currently particularly encouraged.

Expectations

This is, at least, a one-year commitment starting in January 2025.

OYSTER members will:

  • Support young scientists within the EuroMarine community;
  • Advocate for marine sciences and ocean health;
  • Engage in diverse activities and projects throughout the year;
  • Take the initiative to develop new activities within the group.

Selected members meet once a month for 1h online, although continued participation via online platforms (Teams) and in your own networks is required to build, carry out and follow up all OYSTER projects and activities. Additionally, OYSTER organizes an annual workshop where all members can meet in person and discuss different topics, plan activities and respond to ECR’s concerns and priorities. Among all activities OYSTER pursues, collaboration with other ECR networks and production of publications related to ECRs are two of them. OYSTER representatives are encouraged to actively participate in other events and conferences.

How to apply

You should send by email (oyster@euromarinenetwork.eu) your CV and a short motivation letter (max. 300 words).
