Deadline: 31 May 2025
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has launched its annual GBIF Graduate Researchers Award. The competition seeks to encourage research and innovation in biodiversity informatics based on data published through GBIF. Researchers who are master’s or doctoral students can apply for this award. In 2025, two 5,000€ prizes will be awarded, one of which is for PhD students.
Stages of the competition
The GBIF national nodes must first choose the candidates who will represent the country. Each national node will be able to nominate two candidates to be selected from the national applications. The Portuguese GBIF node will select the two national candidates to be proposed to the GBIF Scientific Committee.
Eligibility
Portugal will nominate candidates who are enrolled in a university degree programme. Candidates must also have Portuguese nationality or be students with another nationality but enrolled at a Portuguese institution.
The research work doesn’t need to have been completed by the time the application is submitted.
Funding
Two € 5,000 prizes will be awarded to a master’s and a doctoral student in 2025.
How to apply
Applicants should send their applications by email to node@gbif.pt for selection at the national level. All documents submitted must be in English. You may consult the list of documents to be submitted with the application here. Please note that the project description is very much focused on the use of data in biodiversity and/or in the conservation of biological diversity, namely the data made available by GBIF. Students with doubts about the GIBF should seek help from their supervisors, the GBIF National Node, the GBIF International Secretariat or members of the GBIF Scientific Committee to clarify them. Letters of support will also be needed, so it’s a good idea to prepare them in advance.
