The functionality of Côa Valley as a wildlife corridor is hampered by habitat degradation, wildlife persecution and a lack of awareness about the importance of natural heritage and services that functional ecosystems bring to communities. Rural abandonment represents an opportunity for this area to become a rewilded landscape. The goal of this project is to develop a coherent ecosystem and strengthen the wildlife corridor of the Côa Valley, connecting Douro Internacional and Malcata Natura 2000 areas. A nature and culture-based economy will be built in order to create communal support for a wilder environment in which natural processes and wildlife shape the landscape.
