The main goal of the research work was focused on the study of the impact of biomass characteristics and ash during TCC of biomass, including both combustion and gasification applications, and in particular in bubbling fluidized bed reactors (FBR).

To achieve the project goals, it was developed set of activities that included the evaluation of the physical-chemical characteristics of several biomass fuels available in Portugal for energy conversion, proposed and evaluated some biomass mixtures, characterization of processes of TCC of biomass, namely combustion and gasification, characterization of distinct ash flows (both at lab-scale and industrial scale), characterization of some ash effects during TCC of biomass, defined suitable operating conditions for TCC for some biomass fuels, and identification of some general guidelines to take in account about ashes during TCC of biomass. In the scope of the activities it was also developed knowledge about possible management solutions for ashes from TCC of biomass. It was made the upgrading and development of experimental facilities, namely an infrastructure with a pilot-scale bubbling fluidised bed reactor, to develop experimental work.
