Course Objective
The main objective of the course is to provide training on the methodologies and tools for organizing, preparing, and publishing biodiversity data through GBIF.
Date and Venue
June 25–27, 2025, PORBIOTA Room (Room 48), Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Main Building), Lisbon.
Description
This theoretical and practical course is designed to teach and practice how to publish biodiversity data through GBIF. This edition of the course will introduce, for the first time, how to publish DNA-derived occurrence data (including environmental DNA) and ecological data using the Humboldt Extension. It is aimed at researchers or professors, curators of biological and natural history collections, staff from public administration or the private sector, protected area managers, and NGO members who are actively involved in cataloguing, monitoring, and managing biodiversity data.
The course will cover the following topics:
- Data standards and organization of biodiversity data
- Publishing DNA-derived and environmental DNA data
- Publishing ecological data using the Humboldt Extension
- Data quality control and cleaning
- Publishing data through the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT)
Requirements
Ideally, participants should bring a biodiversity dataset to work on during the practical sessions involving data standardization, publication, metadata preparation, and data paper drafting. If it is not possible to bring such a dataset, a sample dataset will be provided.
Registration
You can register until June 11, 2025. Please use the registration form provided. In addition to your personal details, you should include your motivation for participating in the course and a short summary of your previous work related to biodiversity data.
