Fires and air quality – CESAM/DAO researchers on CNN Portugal

In a difficult week in several regions of the country due to the occurrence of numerous fires with tragic consequences for the affected populations, researchers from CESAM and the Department of Environment and Planning of the University of Aveiro were interviewed by the television channel CNN Portugal, about the impact of fires on air quality.

Célia Alves, coordinating researcher at CESAM/DAO highlights the fact that the air quality in the North and Center regions of the country is of poor or very poor quality. The researcher also states that, as with the risk of fire, populations should be alerted via cell phone to the risk of deteriorating air quality. The interview can be seen in full here.

Also Alexandra Monteiro, assistant researcher at CESAM/DAO, highlights the degradation of air quality in the district of Aveiro as a consequence of fires, reinforcing the importance of people protecting themselves, especially the elderly, children and people with chronic respiratory diseases. It is worth noting that CESAM has developed several research projects related to the topic of fire, in areas as diverse as air quality, spatial planning and ecological restoration.
