Shellfish species represents valuable seafood products both in Portugal and China. In particular, Manila (Asari) clam production is growing faster in Portugal, meanwhile China is already the first producer in the world. Clam market has great social economic value; however, problems still occur concerning clams safety for human consumption and the impact of their exploitation on the environment. The proposed project will investigate the environmental quality and suitability of Manila clam productive sites, focusing on organic and inorganic pollution; the health state of clams in terms of bioaccumulation, physiological and biochemical responses; the ecological impact of clam exploitation on the ecosystem; the ecological carrying capacity of clam. The research project will help to identify the areas of highest quality for clam production and to define better strategies for clam management in both countries, to improve seafood value and to protect coastal environments.
