Marine biofouling is a global problem with massive economic and environmental costs. This project aims to carry out an integrative assessment of the fate, behaviour and toxicity of an innovative anti-fouling nanoadditive, developed by the company Smallmatek, Lda. that offers high performance solutions to tackle corrosion and biofouling. Thus, the project intends to assess the environmental fate and behaviour (Task 1), exposure effects (Task 2) and bioaccumulation and biomagnification trends along the temperate and tropical marine trophic chains (Task 3), induced by the encapsulated and free biocides. The most relevant data will be disseminated in congresses and published in ISI journals. The project will contribute to: a) reinforce the institutional relationships between institutions; b) promote the mobility and qualification of young researchers; (c) promote best industrial practices (e.g. safe by design strategies) and the blue growth; and d) respond to current societal challenges.
