This project is part of the legal provisions on the environment that form part of the Habitats Directive on the Preservation of Natural Habitats and Wild Fauna and Flora (92/43/CEE) and regulate the Natura 2000 Network, the Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Zones. More specifically, this project aims to: i) update information on the distribution, population status and threat status of native mammal species occurring in the national territory, including the 26 species (21 species of terrestrial mammals and 5 species of marine mammals) included in the Annex II of the Habitats Directive; ii) give priority to filling information gaps, namely with regard to the presence of species in Protected Areas, or included or recently proposed for the List of Sites of Community Importance (SIC); iii) update information on game species, many of them with high socio-economic importance, for example in terms of hunting in classified hunting areas (Hunting Zones); and iv) update information on exotic and invasive species, for which current information is particularly scarce
