In Portugal, desertification is a serious issue, particularly in the Interior region, with significant negative impacts on vulnerable areas across social, environmental, economic, and political dimensions. TERRASAFE.PT aims to address this challenge by adapting the methodologies and solutions developed under the European TERRASAFE project, tailoring them to the specific needs of Portugal’s Interior region to mitigate desertification.
The project seeks to empower local communities with innovative and sustainable tools to combat desertification, focusing on reducing soil degradation and increasing water availability in vulnerable areas such as Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco, and Nisa. TERRASAFE.PT will test the effectiveness of these solutions at five demonstration sites in Portugal, benefiting from the knowledge and innovations developed within the broader European framework.
Local communities will be actively involved throughout the process, from selecting which solutions to implement to evaluating their impact at the demonstration sites. This collaboration between TERRASAFE.PT, local communities, and policymakers is key to ensuring that science and society work together effectively in the fight against desertification and towards a greener, more sustainable future.
