Victor Manuel Balcão is from October 2013, Adjunct Professor at the University of Sorocaba (UNISO, Sorocaba, Brazil), where he also leads the research laboratory “PhageLab – Laboratory of Biofilms and Bacteriophages”. He is also integrated member and researcher of CESAM – Center of Marine and Environmental Studies at the University of Aveiro (CESAM-UA, Aveiro, Portugal). From 2000 to 2013, Victor Balcão was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at University Fernando Pessoa (Porto, Portugal). From August 2012 to July 2013 he was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Sorocaba, with a grant from FAPESP (2011/51077-8). From September 1991 to July 2000, he was Invited Assistant Intern at ESB-UCP.
In September 1991 he graduated in Food Engineering at the College of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University (ESB-UCP). In December 1998, Victor Balcão obtained his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from ESB-UCP (1992-1998). During his Ph.D. he performed a three-month internship at the University of Helsinki in Finland. After obtaining his Ph.D., he was a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Enzyme Engineering at ESB-UCP, in a joint project with the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica of CSIC (ICP-CSIC, Madrid, Spain, 1999-2001), and at CESAM-UA (Feb 2019 – Jan 2020) with a scholarship from FAPESP (process FAPESP BPE ref. 2018/05522-9), developing a research project with acronym “PsaPhageKill” at the Department of Biology of the University of Aveiro. On November 04th 2013, he obtained recognition of his Ph.D. degree by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil) (Doctor in Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology, Area of Food Technology, Certificate registered with number 116247, in the terms of Article 48 of Law 9394/96). From 2014 to 2020 he was a Research in Productivity fellow of CNPq (Brazil) (refs. No. 306113/2014-7 and 308208/2017-0). In 2002 he was formally elected Member of SIGMA XI - The Scientific Research Society (North Carolina, U.S.A.).
Currently, Victor Balcão has as main research interests the (i) structural and functional stabilization of protein entities (with emphasis on bacteriophages and enzymes) for biopharmaceutical, biosensing and food applications, and (ii) development of innovative and non-invasive delivery systems for protein entities (with emphasis on the transdermal route). Victor Balcão has published over 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed, indexed scientific journals, supervised 28 M.Sc. theses (25 defended and 3 ongoing) and 4 Ph.D. theses (1 defended and 3 ongoing). A detailed analysis of the impact factors of all scientific papers published by Victor Manuel Balcão in journals listed in the 2019 Science Citation Index® by Thomson Reuters, indicates that the weighted average impact factor is equal to 2.771, which reflect the special care that has been exercised within his research groups (both former and current) to publish in respected scientific journals with a significant audience (which tend, consequently, to be the most demanding in terms of quality standards). In the PUBLONS database, his publications account 2406 citations and a H-index of 23 (2022.05.03); in the GOOGLE SCHOLAR database, his publications account 3837 citations and a H-index of 31 (2022.05.03), whereas in the SCOPUS database his publications account 2607 citations and a H-index of 26 (2022.05.03).
