On November 23 at 3:00 PM, the Torreira Parish Council will host a special gathering between shellfish harvesters from the Ria de Aveiro and the Sea Guardians from the Sado Estuary. This event will focus on “moliço” (seaweed), providing participants with the opportunity to share stories and concerns about relying on seagrass meadows for their livelihoods through fishing and shellfish harvesting.
The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Ocean Alive association, is part of the LIFE SeagrassRIAwild project, coordinated by CESAM and the University of Aveiro. The project aims to create a network of “Guardians of the Lagoon” and is co-funded by the European Union through the LIFE program. Its goal is to reverse the decline of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in the Ria de Aveiro using nature-based solutions.
This event promises to be a valuable opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of seagrass meadows and the challenges faced by those who depend on this vital ecosystem.
