Diogo Nunes Cardoso, researcher at CESAM/DBIO, was this week’s guest on Science Cast, a podcast by Playsolutions Audiovisual dedicated to science communication, with CESAM as an institutional partner.
The conversation focused on ecotoxicology and the challenge of sustainability, areas in which he has been developing leading research at both national and international levels. Holding a PhD in Ecology and Global Changes, his research centres on the impacts of emerging contaminants, such as nanopesticides, on terrestrial ecosystems, while exploring innovative solutions that reconcile agricultural production with environmental protection.
He currently coordinates the ENTOSAFE project, which is dedicated to assessing the food safety of edible insects — an area of research of growing importance given the challenges of global food security and the search for alternative protein sources. In parallel, he is part of the InsectERA consortium, which aims to boost the bioindustry in Portugal by promoting the sustainable use of insects across various economic sectors.
With a multidisciplinary approach, Diogo Nunes Cardoso combines science, sustainability, and innovation, contributing to the development of strategies that minimise the impacts of contaminants and promote safer, more environmentally responsible agricultural practices. His participation in Science Cast reflects his commitment to making scientific knowledge accessible to the wider public and to raising awareness of the importance of more resilient and sustainable agriculture.
