Organization

The Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) has an organisational structure designed to ensure efficient functioning in accordance with the CESAM Regulations. Its management bodies include the Director, the Scientific Council, the External Advisory Committee, the Coordination and Liaison Advisory Council, and the Doctoral Students’ Group.

The Director is responsible for the leadership, management, and administration of CESAM, in compliance with applicable legislation and regulations. The Director’s duties are outlined in Article 7 of the current CESAM regulations. The Director is supported by up to five Deputy Directors and one Advisor, whom they appoint, delegating specific responsibilities as needed.

The Scientific Council consists of all integrated members and is chaired by the Director. It operates in plenary sessions or through a Coordinating Committee, to which the plenary may delegate certain responsibilities. The functions of the Scientific Council are described in Article 9 of the current CESAM regulations.

The External Advisory Committee comprises three to seven external experts, both national and international, recognised for their distinguished contributions to relevant scientific fields. These experts are proposed by the Director and approved by the Scientific Council. Their roles are detailed in Article 10 of the current CESAM regulations.

The Coordination and Liaison Advisory Council serves as an advisory body to the Director of CESAM. It includes the Director and Deputy Directors of CESAM, as well as the Directors of the organic units to which CESAM is linked.

The Doctoral Students’ Group is a consultative body governed by its own regulations, which are approved by CESAM-affiliated doctoral students. This group consists of three to eight doctoral students, ideally representing at least 3/5 of the organic units to which CESAM is linked. The roles of the Doctoral Students’ Group are outlined in Article 12 of the current CESAM regulations.

CESAM’s scientific framework comprises three Research Lines and six Research Groups. The Coordinators of the Research Lines are directly appointed by the Director, while the Coordinators of the Research Groups are appointed by the Director based on recommendations from the respective groups.
